    Symptoms

Any vein that is close to the surface of the skin can be varicosed. They are most often in the legs. Standing and walking increase the pressure in the veins of the lower body. For most people, varicose veins are simply a cosmetic concern. Varicose veins can cause aching and discomfort in the leg. Sometime they can lead to more serious health problems,

      Symptoms include:

    • Veins that are dark blue or purple
    • Veins that are bulging. They can also appear to be twisted
    • A heavy feeling in the legs that may be accompanied with aches
    • The lower legs may have cramping, burning, throbbing or swelling
    • Worse pain for being stationary
    • The veins may itch
    • Skin colour changes around the veins

    Causes

Arteries carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Veins return blood from the rest of the body to the heart. The calf muscle and the veins must work against gravity to get the blood back to the heart. There are valves that make sure the blood does not seep back down the veins and if there is weakened or damaged valves this leads to varicose valves The flow of the blood backwards can cause blood pooling in the veins to stretch and twist.
