Causes
Arteries carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Veins return blood from the rest of the body to the heart. The calf muscle and the veins must work against gravity to get the blood back to the heart. There are valves that make sure the blood does not seep back down the veins and if there is weakened or damaged valves this leads to varicose valves The flow of the blood backwards can cause blood pooling in the veins to stretch and twist.
