    Symptoms

This condition occurs when the hair in the follicle curls inwards instead of growing straight out causing the pimple like bump to form on the surface of the skin. The pimple like bump is the inflammation under the skin where the hair is curled in and stuck. This can occur anywhere you shave on the body: face, legs, groin and underarms.

    Symptoms include:

    • Red pimple like sore, some may contain pus (white like fluid).
    • Itchy like feeling to the inflamed area.
    • For more highly infected areas the sores are painful.
    • Darkening of the skin as a result of hyperpigmentation caused from the inflammation.

    Causes

The cause of Pseudofolliculitis barbae is when the hair in the follicle is curly or curls back into the follicle instead of straight out, thus stuck in the follicle causing irritation and inflammation.

Anyone can develop Folliculitis. But you’re at increased risk if you:

    • You shave often and/or using an unclean razor
    • Wearing tight clothing
    • More common in men with curly hair
    • Sweating a lot from activities and then not cleaning off sweat afterwards
