    Onychomycosis (Nail Fungus)

    Nail fungus also known as onychomycosis (on-ih-koh-my-KOH-sis) is an inflection of the nails.

    Symptoms

    Nail fungus appears as white or yellowish areas on the nail. As the infection progress the nail can thicken, the sides of the nails go bitterly, nail can detached from nail bed and then spread to other nails.

    Left untreated, the risk of actinic keratoses turning into a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma is about 5% to 10%.

    Symptoms include:

    • Change in the nail colour
    • Thickening of the nail
    • Nail turning brittle
    • Nail detaches from nail bed

    Causes

    Nail fungus is caused by a number a different fungal organisms.

    Risk Factors

    Anyone can develop nail fungus. But if you experience the following contact your doctor:

    • If you are diabetic and develop nail fungus
    • If you start bleeding from the nail beds
    • If area is painful and preventing you from daily routines.
